Walt Baker

Walter E. Baker was introduced to flying as a child when he got a ride in an old Stinson that came through town selling rides.  He served with the US Navy during World War II as an aircraft mechanic cruising on the USS Ranger with VF-9 (Fighting Squadron 9) while they were flying the Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat.  The Ranger was engaged in Operation Torch - the invasion of North Africa.   He spent time on the east coast of the United States working with Carrier Air Service Units (CASU) and keeping various aircraft from NE-1 (Navy Piper Cubs), trainers, fighters and blimps flying.

After retiring as a Vice President with ARCO (Atlantic Richfield oil company) he earned his Private license in 1984 - instructed by his son Jim.  He earned his instrument rating in 1986.
